Sat. Mar. 6 - Renegades vs. Wallabies [Update2]

Match Canceled!

The Wallabies don't have enough players.

Renegades:  We're going to use this as a full-pitch training day.  Show up at noon and get kitted up.
This is at at Anderson Hills, not PSNS!
Lets have everyone there so that we can work together with our full lineups.

Luke: (Kris?:)  Bring the equipment, please.  We may set up the posts, and
we need to hand everything off to the girls for Sunday.

[UPDATE 2] Renegades:  by "everyone," we mean everyone that would normally show for this home match -- we're going to train hard -- and this is a rare opportunity for us to scrimmage full 10 on 10 (or more).  We're going to need water and we're going to need our injured reserves on standby to help out with things like running touch.  Unless you've made other arrangements, coach is expecting to see you there.

Match Report: Renegades vs. Pigs

February 27, 2010
Anderson Hill Fields, Silverdale WA
Kitsap Renegades vs. Portland Pigs
Brisk, overcast, 55 degree day.  Southerly breeze and intermittent drizzle
12-5

Kitsap's Renegades kicked off to the Portland Pigs at 1pm with approximately 50 fans in attendance.  Thoughtfully, the rugby gods had pre-moistened the fields, softening them up while keeping the footing solid and not muddy.

Kitsap started out strong -- quickly putting Portland on the defensive.  Shortly after the start of the match, Portland cleared the ball and held Kitsap at mid field until a clearing kick moved the action back to the Portland 5 meter zone.  Several phases of hard fought rucks later, and at about the 16 minute mark, Renegade, Rick Hardwick, dove the ball in for the first try of the match (5-0).  10 minutes later, Kitsap once again drove back into Portland's red-zone, where Portland's defenses, this time, held.  Throughout the first half, Portland had several advances that they generated with clearing kicks and breakaways, but the advantages were quickly lost due to penalties against the Pigs and unanswered kicks from Kitsap, resulting in turnovers, loss of field position, and new, sustained drives by Kitsap.  By the end of the first half, Portland had pushed back, looking much stronger in their scrums, and maintaining possessions through multiple phases of play, ending in a strong drive that, unfortunately, fell short before the halftime whistle.

Into the second half, just past the 20 minute mark, and after a really well fought half, Portland found themselves in a series of try line rucks, with Portland's 8 man eventually driving in a try -- so with 15 minutes left in the match, the score was tied at 5 all.  Then, with less than ten minutes left in the match, a quick drive down-field, followed by a quick pitch out from Kitsap's scrummy, Chris Munter, to fullback Tom Springer results in a try at the posts.  The conversion, by Brent Colby brought the score  to 12 - 5, which is where the match ended.

Overall a very good, well fought day on the pitch.  Kitsap's back-line play made a significant difference in the match and the team's new focus on fitness is starting to show.  Kitsap's forwards looked dominant in rucks and scrums, but lineout throw-ins still appear problematic.

The post game festivities were held at MoonDogs, Too in Port Orchard where the teams shared a spaghetti feed and songs.

Match Report: Renegades @ Corvallis

February 20, 2010
North Albany Middle School, Albany OR
Kitsap Renegades @ Corvallis
Beautiful, sunny, 60 degree day with a mild cross-field breeze at strart of match
19 - 43

Shortly after 2 pm, the renegades kicked off in front of approximately 30 to 40 fans on the North Albany Middle School football field (field was marked oddly and football posts at the end of the try-zone were used rather than the proper location, which lead to some confusion during the game).

Once again, in a trend that's continued since the team's previous half, Kitsap traveled well, kitting up 22 players to start the match. Corvallis, who fielded only 13 players against Kitsap in the fall, had more than a full side to chose from, suiting up a full 27 man side.

At a third of the way into the half, Corvallis drew first blood with a corner try and a failed conversion (0-5). Penalties and line-outs put the Renegades on their heels throughout the first half, playing most of the first 40 minutes behind their own 22 meter mark. Scrums looked evenly matched, but Kitsap found themselves with very few put-ins in the first half. A turnover, to the Renegades, at about the 30 minute mark resulted in a promising up-field drive, through multiple phases of strong rucks -- the first real threat Kitsap showed since kickoff -- prior to that, Kitsap's only gains were coming in the form of defensive kicking. Corvallis followed that drive with two of additional tries in the final 10 mins of the first half. In the final seconds of the half, Kitsap had pushed Corvallis back into their own end of the field, and the last play of the half was a missed, Kitsap attempted kick-at-goal following a penalty on Corvallis.

At the end of the first half, Kitsap, down by 3 tries, was starting to look more competitive then at the beginning -- Corvallis had missed two conversions, leaving a real potential for a Kitsap comeback. The score was 0 to 17.

The second half got off to a much better start for Kitsap -- looking more evenly matched than the first. Corvallis ran a touchdown out the back of the try-zone at 10 minutes into the second half, followed quickly by a recovery of the 22-drop, which was run directly in for their 4th unanswered try (0-22). 23 minutes in, Kitsap fought their way onto the board with a try in the corner by John Moore, the result of a penalty tap with dummy to Nate Jensen (5-22). The battle pitched back and forth pretty evenly from that point on. Soon after, a Kitsap defensive clearing kick was run all the way in by Corvallis for their 5th try of the day (5-29). Minutes later, Kitsap drove to the Corvallis 5 meter line, and Renegade, Brian Bruce ran in a corner-try on a quick penalty tap-and-go, with the conversion kicked in by Brent Colby (12-29). 3 minutes later, Corvallis matched the Kitsap try with their 6th (12-36) -- and 3 minutes after that, nearing the end of the second half, Kitsap responded to the Corvallis try with a ball spun out to John Moore at the Corvallis 22 for John's second try of the day (19-36). Corvallis comes back for their final try of the day at the 80 minute whistle, resulting in a final score of 19-43 in favor of those cheating bastards, Corvallis!

All in all, a good, and fun day or rugby. Kitsap matched Corvallis try for try in the second half, and no one could have asked for a nicer February afternoon to play on.

The post game festivities were held at Springhill Cellars where the teams shared grilled burgers and songs.

Line Up:  (WIP/TBD -- waiting for roster details)
1. Eric Simon, 2. Redwing, 3. Daithe, 4. Rob, 5. Nate Jensen, 6. Brent Rotter, 7. Glenn, 8. John Moore, 9. Brian Bruce, 10. Brent Colby, 11. Tevya Friedman, 12. Rick Hardwick, 13. Chris Munter, 14. Scott Miller, 15.  Luke

Scoring:
Tries: John Moore (2), Brian Bruce
Conversions: Brent Colby (2)

Man of the match went to Nathan Jensen and Chris Munter (blood sub'ed for by Rick Hardwick). (Corvallis: Who were men of the match for you guys?)

The referee was Hickabee(?).  (ref:  please contact me to contribute a comment to the match report)

Kitsap was coached by David Schneegas, who summarized the match as follows: "Spotted them 3/4 of the game and 4 tries before getting stuck in.  Three tries was value for the effort but not enough to overcome the slow start."

Renegades 3 2 0 0 19 1 0 21
Corvallis 7 4 0 0 43 5 0 29
