Anderson Hills Athletic Field - Lower Pitch - in Silverdale
Kitsap Renegades vs. Eugene
Hot, clear, sunny, ~80 degrees. no wind
6 - 17
The Rugby gods are angry and demand each Renegade add an extra mile a day to their training until we turn this thing around.
Hydration and exhaustion was an issue again -- and it was another hot day on the sub-par postage-sized field that the Kitsap soccer interests have allowed us to use. We're trying to move our next match to West Hills Elementary now.
This was an intense and hard hitting match. Win or lose it was all around good rugby and it felt like the ref really let us play the game, making good judgments on, and use of, advantage play.
The match was very well contested in the first half, with Eugene dropping 3 points onto the board at the end of the half on a penalty kick for goal.
Early in the first half, Eugene squeaked in a contested try at the line, and made their conversion. Five minutes later, the Renegades responded with a 3 point penalty kick on goal. After another 10 minutes of tough play, Eugene, showing fatigue, brought in another try, followed by their final conversion, bringing their point total to 17. With about ten minutes left to play, kitsap scored another 3 on another penalty kick at goal, making the final score 6 to 17, Eugene.
From Coach Rob Edwards:
I want to apologize for the dose of RAG I laid on the team after the match; if you had ANY idea how frustrating it is to watch YOU/US lose with the incredible potential/talent YOU guys have, I mean you have it NOW, it just frickin' KILLS me!
We had 15 men today play the hardest they could, guys were hurt, guys played out of position AGAIN, and we gave Eugene a good scare and for the most part played a damn good match! It LOOKED like rugby! First half tackling was crisp, they rarely crossed the gain line with out trouble, second half was a bit worse and we took them on too HIGH all game, instead of the waist, but the tackling overall was damn good. The scrummaging was overall very good, thats the most stable/active pack we have had this season. And we took damn near every one of our put-ins, and a couple of theirs! Superior scummaging! Our maul continued to shine, we are becoming NASTY maulers, and we'll work MORE on that next week. Rucking was also improved, and we contested every ball with vigor! Our lineout continues to suffer from the lack of tall 'lifters' and a liftee to really dominate the lineout, we spoiled a LOT of their ball with taps, etc, but really had a tough time just taking and binding, however- the lineouts were ALSO much improved.
Back line was much improved although different (once again) from the week before, we still had a bit of trouble getting the ball out to the wing, which MUST be worked on until we can spin the corner at will, but ALL the backs play was much improved! We had flawless fullbacking again this week.
If we have improvement like we saw THIS weekend for the next 3 or 4 weeks, we WILL be playing at Division II level. We need to keep continuity from week to week in terms of players, and we need a bit of work on team fitness, please make training both nights if at ALL possible! We made a noble effort today, see you ALL at workout! Go Renegades! Rob Edwards.

Our man of the match was Big. Eugene's was one of their backs (sorry - don't recall the name). The Renegades destroyed Eugene in the boatrace.
